...or however you spell that word.
Soundcloud page.
Go here to listen to the backing track and upload your vocal track when you're done.
http://soundcloud.com/groups/save-daves-of-thunder/info
Recording instructions:
Record yourself singing along with the backing track, but wear headphones so you only record your voice. Upload that file to the Soundcloud. Sing the whole song (up to the point where we have lyrics, no need to make it go on and on), and I'll edit together the parts I think are best suited to each person. If you have requests for certain lines you want to sing, I'll try to make sure you sing them unless someone else wants them too.
Don't worry about your voice and/or mic sounding bad. The goal is to get as many people to join as possible. I can do some production work to make the sound quality a little better if you have a shitty mic.
Main goals to keep in mind while you're recording: have your voice be at a level where it's not so loud that the audio file "clips" or becomes distorted, but loud enough so that you're clearly distinguishable from ambient noise in the background. And wear headphones while you're listening to the backing track, so that minimal bleeding (ideally none) of the backing track gets recorded. If you keep these goals in mind the mic quality thing won't be too much of an issue.
And in regard to if you think you have a "bad" voice -- all the better. I think it will be great for non-musician fans to be mixed in with the songsmith all-stars, because it will show the solidarity of the wide spectrum of BTLs involved in this effort.

Lyrics:

There comes a time
When the Shek Republic and
Fensters Union must come together as one
There are podcasts dying
And it's time to lend a hand to stop
The biggest mistake of all
We can't go on
Knowing that two Daves
Can't cut out the noise of radio again
We are all a part of
the Daves of Thunder family
And the truth, you know the Daves are all we need
(CHORUS)
We're BTL's
We are the Monkeys
We are the ones who want our podcast back
So don't stop bitching
There's a choice they're making
They're ruining our own lives
It's true they'll make a better day
Just Dave and Dave
Send them your tweets
So they'll know that someone cares
And their show will finally be let free
As Pete has shown us, in his Jacuzzi Thoughts
We all must demonstrate our moxie
(CHORUS)
Weez is on the Jerk list,
but there seems no hope at all
But if we trust in Pete,
Then Adam's show we must call,
Well well well let's realize
That Feeney can only come
When we,
juggle his balls as one
Yeah yeah yeah yeahh...
(CHORUS REPEATED

Could someone post some instructions on what program to use to record stuff and how to keep the backing track from being recorded at the same time? It would help a lot.

I'll post some instructions for Windows and Mac in a couple hours. Have to pass a midterm first.

Listen with anything (WMP, VLC). Record with Audacity (free). Watch the levels during a rehearsal to make sure it doesn't clip.

Audacity is what I used to make my recording and I did the whole thing (minus just doing takes of the song) in like an hour. It's very easy and a great program. You can add in the music track, record yourself singing to it as it's playing back (through headphones), and then remove the music track to save it.

I use audacity but for some reason it doesn't give me any option to select my mic from the drop down menu.

It doesn't work when you just press record? How about going to Edit -> Preferences -> Recording Device? Can you choose your mic from here, or is this the drop down menu you're talking about?
Also, are you on a Windows or Mac machine? You could use Sound Recorder or Garage Band as an alternative to Audacity if it isn't working for you.

I'm on Windows. I will try your suggestion in Audacity and see what happens.

Upped my lil contribution on soundcloud. Audacity is the way to go. Very simple stuff.

I think a reasonable goal would be to get all vocals recorded by Monday. How says everyone else?

Figure I might as well be sober for something as magnificent as this songs gonna be.

That seems alright. As quoted from this post
