Thank God.

For a moment there everything I thought I'd ever known was shattered.
Mandrake, have you ever seen a commie drink a glass of water?

There's this fundraiser called "Barks for Beers" http://divinecanines.org/barksforbeers/ that is in it's third year and happens during the month of May. I think this is the first year I've heard of it, and definitely the first time I've participated. The deal is that you buy a commemorative glass, and a bunch of breweries will pour you a free pint of beer. This year the glass cost $20, and there are 20 breweries in the Austin area participating.

I did not plan on doing it, and if I had I probably would have started at the beginning of the month. But, last Saturday a friend of mine talked me into it. What finally convinced me is that we made tentative plans to go to some breweries next weekend that have been around awhile that I still haven't been to yet.

Last Saturday we just went to four that I had been to before. With just half a month left, I think there's still a good chance we can get all twenty. Now, my dilemna.

$20 for 20 craft beers is a great deal. My friend arrived at the first brewery before I did and got through his pint as I arrived. He's gonna have to wait for me to drink mine, so he's gonna have another as well. But, why pay $4-$5 for a pint? Pay another $20 and now you have TWO glasses and TWO free beers at each brewery! So that's what he does, and I'm like... yeah one beer at each brewery is enough for me.

Of course by the fourth brewery, I did the math and bought another glass, knowing that it will pay for itself with another four brewery visits, having two beers at each. We hit three yesterday.

Getting two glasses seems to be against the spirit of the fundrasier, which is why I didn't buy a second glass when my friend did. On the other hand, what's the difference to the brewery that it's the same person twice vs. two different people? I'm guessing the $20 for each glass gets completely donated to Divine Canines, so shouldn't Divine Canines be happy that they are getting $40 from me instead of $20? On the other hand, aren't the breweries missing out on potential revenue from someone buying a regular pint after the free one? But I wouldn't get a second beer anyway if I had to pay $5 for it. I am so conflicted.

Am I a bad guy?

No. If you buy the second glass you're giving extra money to the charity. If you don't, you're just supporting the breweries. Win/win as I see it.

If they didn't want you to be able to buy 2 glasses, they should have had the standard "limit 1 per customer" boilerplate.

How did they keep track, anyway? If you washed your glass and came in the next day on a different shift, couldn't you have just gotten a second pint for free? Or is there some marking on the glass itself, like a check box per brewery.

My first thought was what is Poochie's Uncle up to now.

As to your question, I think the breweries are in to get people exposed to their beers and to get that $4 or $5 for a second serving.

It's not something I would do, but that's just me.

What?
If you never try anything new, you'll miss out on many of life's great disappointments.
