#302 Los Angeles Ram episode summary, paraphrasing:

Adam: They're going to build that stadium in Inglewood, which is like Mad Max, full of luxury boxes. They're going to give the billionaire who is building that stadium tax breaks. Meanwhile 1200 small businesses, which equals that huge new stadium, gets nothing and moves to Texas, because the climate is bad for them. (why doesn't Carolla Digital move there, since he hates his folks so nothing to keep him in Socal, which he rants against every podcast?)

Drew: Bureaucracy is evil, it's totalitarianism by another name. Obama really loves bureaucracy!

Adam: Govt. is only good for defense and satellites to show you the weather. They can't solve homelessness, which gets worse. All they do is build low-cost homes for homeless people, who defecate in the halls!

Drew: Bureaucracy and totalitarianism are the same!

Adam: The Left is always saying everyone should go to college. No, what we need is good parenting. If everyone went to college, it would be like high school.

Drew: Really we should be trying to raise standards, go for excellence!

Adam: Speaking of excellence, stamps.com baby! [ long live read for stamps.com. Apparently govt. service like the USPS is okay when it's a sponsor]

Adam and Drew going on about some women inPriuses being "rageful" is breathtaking. No self-awareness at all.

Adam says he's worked many Saturday's and late hours like all successful people.

What about people who are more successful than him but whom he dismisses as hacks? Lot of successful people in the entertainment industry that he's shit on. Did they just have greater motor and grit than him?

And what was Drew talking about socialism failing in Canada?

By all international measures, they're doing better than the US system.

Yeah, but doctors can't get richer by ordering unnecessary procedures and tests. Also, the kickbacks from drug reps are not as lucrative either.

Not great for doctors, hospitals or drug cos. Maybe better for the rest.

Drew going on about how single payer would be a huge bureaucracy and that would be more evil than the system we have now.

I liked Adam's talk about how atheists are all arrogant for thinking they're smarter than religious people. Never mind that he's an atheist and he's called religion "stupid stories" a million times.

(And never mind the fact that evangelical Christians teach their children that atheists are evil, immoral people who should be shunned from society, never trusted and tortured eternally in the afterlife. No, the atheists are the arrogant ones because a few of them say that religion is stupid.)

You ever had to deal with an insurance company or a medical billing company? How much more bureaucratic can things get?

Medicare has way less overhead tha private insurance. Drew probably doesn't run his own practice. Maybe an office manager who deals with insurance claims.

Many doctors hire people to work full time dealing with the different insurers.

But it sounds like he's drank the same Kool Aid as Adam, accusing people of trying to take "all" the money rich people make.

Again he must have tax accountants because the highest bracket is now 39% and that's for income above like $350k. The first 50k of his income, he pays the same rate as anyone else and so on for 70k, 80k, etc.

Adam thinks he should pay the same taxes as someone making $50k. Not percentage of taxes, but the actual amount, since he gets no more benefits than the person making $50k.

Even the flat tax people don't believe in such regressive taxes.

In fact, probably the only places with regressive taxes are Latin American or other developing countries.

His view does seem to change according to who he's hanging out with. I do remember the days when he called religious people stupid, with quite a bit of anger in his voice. Now he's around upper-class southern CA religious families, the type who are not stupid nor evangelical. He sees that they're into everything he respects and can't really denounce their beliefs like he used to. Not sure who the religious people he knew before...? Born-again former gang-bangers, I think? That he used to work construction with? So, that colored his view in those days. If he moved to the South there'd probably be yet another point of view of religious people...

Basically he's become a single-issue voter, and that issue is taxes. Since he sides with the right on that one, he has to perform mental gymnastics to rationalize everything else conservatives say and do. The key fallback copouts are:

1. "They take care of their families and pay their taxes," basically whitewashing Christian behavior as if that's universally true and we should just nod out heads in agreement, relying on comparison to extreme negatives like radical Islam and the kind of parenting depicted in the movie Precious.
2. "This affects very few people so let's work big to small" on issues like gay marriage, ignoring the broader implications on societal justice. That way he can still claim to be libertarian but excuse himself from actually having to defend positions that overlap with the left.

He claims to be independent but magically now always sides with the right. It's a little bit like Vanilla Ice and Sonny Bono, except along the issues spectrum instead of through time.

Drew: People making $150-200k are getting crushed! The upper middle class is getting crushed! Well the middle class too but the $150-200k people can't break out!

Adam: I don't know my effective tax rate. If I knew, I'd be on top of Ruby Ridge shooting at federal agents! My fair share is only what the median pays! We live in a country club where half the people don't pay anything but they get a vote on the dues!

I guess Adam has no plans to run for president. He used to joke about the things he'd do if he was king.

With all his real estate and business interests, he should be able to deduct, write off losses and so forth. If he can't find tax attorneys who can set up tax shelters for him, whose fault is that? He's not paying an effective tax rate of over 50%, unless he's not trying to reduce taxes.

But he must think his listeners have the same problems, writing million dollar tax payment checks? Or that when middle class wages are stagnant, they'd be sympathetic to a millionaire whining constantly about how he pays too much, how he should get special rights because he pays so much, etc.
